As featured in the LA Times, Santa Paula is a wonderful getaway location with outstanding accomodations at the historic [and slightly haunted] Glenn Tavern Inn, as well as at the european flavored Santa Paula Inn. Good food can be found at Rabalis Cafe [breakfast is super], Garman's Irish Pub and Mupu Cafe [all on Main Street], also at La Cabana, & Family Diaz Restaurants - as well as the ag-tours at the beautiful Limoneira Lemon Ranch property [ask about dining at sunset in the lemon grove high on a hilll - and maybe a hot air balloon ride]. The Citrus Hot Air Ballon festival is a July national event [don't miss the evening sunset "glow" and bring a camera], and the classic car "Cruise Night" on Main Street with classic cars and great local food, and the historic SP Air Museum at the famous SP airport always happening on the first Friday [classic cars 5pm-9pm] and Sunday [airport] of every month is fun for sure. All that and the SP Museum of Art, Oil Museum, and new million dollar Agriculture Museum are all within walking distance past the historic red and white SP Train depot. Find out about the real train ride to and from SP through the countryside from Filmore. St. Thomas Aquanis is one of the the most beautiful and peaceful campus locations in the nation. All in Santa Paula, just minutes from Ventura and the beautiful CA coastline. About 1 hour from LA, 30 minutes from Santa Barbara is my guess.

Submissions for "The Face of CA" exhibition at The Santa Paula Museum of Art June 29-Oct 20'13
One of the treasures of California is Santa Paula, CA, home of The Santa Paula Museum of Art. One of 4 world class museums in the town. Filled with amazing art, creative and wonderful exhibitions, lecture series and more, this is not only a local showpiece, but should serve as a model for any town wanting to do Art right for their community as well as art followers. On June 29 the SP Museum of Art will feature "The Faces of California" exhibition through October 20. Sign up for their beautiful e-newsletter at www.SantaPaulaArtMuseum.org for details and upcomings. I have collected six paintings seen below of my own both of California locations where I have spent a plain air day, and a few sketches from Santa Paula that might be of interest to local visitors. A few are from a series of "small paintings" I did for a special on-line exhibition of smaller size art. The submission process ends May 24.

Loosing up with some neat barn photo based paintings...
I decided that my last painting of the neat adobe in Santa Paula [below] was a bit "tight". I am still working on that one. I am really trying to get as lose as I can. That means I have to understand the fundamentals before I can really soar like I want to. I have come close or done it as you can see on this blog as well as my Fine Art Sales site at www.BobRaserArt.com I guess for every painter, even the pros I have interviewed, learn something new every time they paint. You never know it all. These are small and the flag barn [both based on photos from photg Sue Calaustro] feel good to me and much more loose. That's a good thing.

Santa Paula Adobe home...
Santa Paula, CA is filled with so many great looking homes and places it's really a toss up on where to stop and paint for an hour or so. I picked this neat adobe that was just too colorful, elegant and old California to pass up. Thanks to the neighbors too for letting me unwind for 2 hours after a day working in that town. Plan to do a lot more during my 4 week job that will take there every other day for sure. [8x10 acrylic]

Painting in Santa Paula
After a morning of actually working hard on a great vid-project in one of California's most perfect places, Santa Paula, I decided to stop a while & unwind by sketching out this wonderful adobe home tucked in to the hills above the small city. Every house in this area is a painting for sure. The neighbors and City workers in those small trucks working in the neighborhood were great to me and welcoming to this "tough to park anyplace" small road. I plan to finish it in the studio tomorrow & post the final soon. Stay tuned.

Thanks Peggy Kroll-Roberts....
"Splash Sisters" was a hit! Peggy Kroll-Roberts runs tough and productive workshops. I attended her figure class at the popular Knowlton Gallery near SF in Lodi, CA where I asked Peggy to suggest several of her solid video lessons for me to work from after I finished her class. She did, and they have been a great addition to her on the spot teaching. The result: At the Allied Artisis of the Santa Monica Mts. & Seashore spring show and sales event this past weekend this PK-R inspired painting got lots of attention right from the start. I plan to do more! It was purchasaed by a young man who I am told has a fine beach home overlooking the Pacific. How neat that "Splash Sisters" will continue to have a good time and bring a bit of sunshine in to this perfect setting.

"Joy"
I was painting with The Allied Artists of the Santa Monica Mt's. & Seashore on a shining Saturday morning. The location was a cliff above a famous beach landmark, the high rock at Point Dume in Malibu. As I was painting this smaller 6x8 plein air, a guy came to the high spot on the cliff and spread his arms wide as if to take in all that he could see. A few minutes later a dad and his daughter. The girl did the same gesture. Later on, it was a hiking couple. They both made the same gesture. So I had to add it, and called it what I thought they were feeling - "Joy". I will make it a part of my exhibit at the March 24, 10-5 exhibit and sales event at the King Gillette Ranch in Calabasas, CA.
